Indiana high school basketball: C.J. Gunn, Peter Suder, Jalen Hooks shine

Vincent Brady, Cathedral: The senior guard and Air Force recruit had 24 points, five assists and four rebounds in an 86-78 win over Fort Wayne Blackhawk and added 17 points and five assists in an 84-56 win over Franklin Central. Quentin Bragg, Brownsburg: The senior guard scored a career-high 23 points in a 63-48 win over Fishers and had 14 points in a 64-60 loss to Pike. He helped Brownsburg to a 57-52 win over Noblesville with an 18-point effort to end the week. Nicky Flesher, Andrean: Andrean swept a four-game week with a big lift from the senior guard. Flesher had 14 points in a 47-43 win over Lowell, 23 points in a 72-54 win over Highland, 14 points in a 61-38 win over Hobart and capped his week with 33 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the 3-point line in a 73-50 win over Hammond Noll. Flesher went over 1,000 points – the eighth Andrean player to do so – in the win over Hammond Noll. Fab 15: Strong showing for teams on top in this week’s Indy-area rankings What we learned this week: On scheduling, recruiting, national anthem Jaxson Gould, Warsaw: The sophomore had 26 points on 11-for-16 shooting in a 70-44 win over Plymouth, along with eight assists and six steals. Gould added 15 points in a 76-32 victory over Wabash. Camden Gasser, Southridge: The three-sport athlete, a Michigan baseball recruit, broke the school’s single-season assist record, a 35-year-old mark previously held by Ron Patberg. Gasser has 137 assists this season. Southridge improved to 11-8 with wins over North Posey and Tell City. C.J. Gunn, Lawrence North: The junior erupted for 33 points and broke a 22-year-old school record with nine 3-pointers in a 95-70 win over Fort Wayne Snider. The previous record was held by Chris Hill, a 2001 Indiana All-Star who played at Michigan State and set a Big Ten record with 10 3-pointers in a game. Gunn, an Indiana recruit, had nine points in a 57-39 win over Ben Davis. Jesse Hall, Crawfordsville: The 6-8 senior had a monster week with 33 points on 14-for-22 shooting from the field, along with five rebounds and four assists, in a 74-33 win over North Montgomery. He followed that with 34 points, five rebounds, five blocked shots and four assists in a 78-66 win over Tri-West. Jalen Hooks, Crispus Attucks: The 6-7 sophomore had 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in a 96-54 win over Gary 21st Century and followed it with 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals in an 85-44 win over Tindley. D.J. Hughes, Lawrence North: The Butler recruit had a huge week with 21 points and six rebounds in a 57-39 win over Ben Davis on Friday night and went for 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a 95-70 win over Fort Wayne Snider on Saturday. Tai McClung, Mississinewa: The 6-4 senior had 25 points on 12-for-16 shooting, along with nine assists and seven rebounds, in a 64-59 win over Manchester. McClung had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists in a one-point loss to Frankfort to reach the 1,000-point club for his career. Gabe McQuay, Tech: The senior guard had 10 points and three assists in a 75-69 loss to Lafayette Jeff, then exploded for 27 points, six rebounds and four assists in an 82-63 victory over Metropolitan. Jeffrey Simmons, Fishers: The 6-6 junior had a big four-game week for Fishers, going for 17 points and six rebounds in a 63-48 loss to Brownsburg, then had 28 points and five rebounds in a 72-57 win over Anderson, 21 points and six rebounds in a 62-54 win over Avon and 14 points and eight rebounds in a 79-47 win over Pendleton Heights. Peter Suder, Carmel: The junior had a big week with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists in a 49-30 win over Hamilton Southeastern and went for 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals in a 43-34 win over Fort Wayne Carroll. Naylon Thompson, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers: The 6-4 senior had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in a 73-64 loss to Fort Wayne South Side, 19 points in a 94-51 loss to Fort Wayne Snider and 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists in an 85-65 win over Winchester. He is third on Luers’ career scoring chart with 1,303 points and needs 15 points to claim the No. 2 spot. Dayveon Turner, Tech: The junior guard had 20 points and six assists in a near-upset of Lafayette Jeff, then had 27 points, six assists and four steals in an 82-63 win over Metropolitan. Isaac Vencel, Bloomington North: The 6-2 senior guard had 20 points in a 60-57 win over Terre Haute North and went for 24 points in a 78-58 win over Terre Haute South. Vencel is closing in on 1,000 career points. Camden Webster, Kankakee Valley: Webster, a freshman, scored 24 points on seven 3-pointers in a 74-67 win over Hebron and followed it with 14 points in a 67-54 loss to Lowell. Webster is averaging 9.3 points in his freshman season. Logan Willoughby, Whiteland: The senior went for 27 points in a 74-62 win over Decatur Central and had 18 points in a 63-57 win over Speedway as the Warriors improved to 11-6. Christian Woods, Central Christian: The 6-4 junior had 23 points and 11 rebounds in a 69-45 victory over Anderson Prep Academy. Woods averaged 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in two games the previous week. Isaac Zay, Fort Wayne Bishop Luers: The freshman went for a career-high 24 points on 11-for-15 shooting, along with five rebounds, in an 85-65 win over Winchester. Zay also had nine points and three assists in a 73-64 loss to Fort Wayne South Side and had 10 points, three rebounds and two assists in a 94-51 loss to Fort Wayne Snider. Vote below.
